Founder of Kady Brownell Tent 36
and
First Tent President





Tent 36 founded June of 1921. The 12 charter members and their ancestors were:

Annie Mulbacher --- Pvt. Bernford Waller

Dr. Emma Balcom served as National President for the Gold Star Mothers from 1941-42.
Her son, Willard A. Balcom, was a private (Bty. B 7th F.A.), killed one month before the end of World War I.
He is buried in Meuse-Argonne cemetery in France.

This paper is dedicated to Kady Brownell for who our Tent is named. It's about a women who,
like many brave men and women, served our country proudly and selflessly. But before telling her story,
I'd like to say a few words on life in the military for women during the Civil War.
